Wanborough v Fairford

Not our best match but one where we tried harder in the second half. The opposition were good and in some cases some of the tallest U8’s we have met – perhaps it made our lads think twice as they held back a little more than usual.  It’s always tricky moving players on an off pitch so regularly but we have a commitment to give all of the lads a fair turn and sometimes this results in a group on pitch who will end up exposed in some way. Defensively both Sam, Will B and Christian played their part and Christian made some good saves as did our other goalie Cameron (who also did a fine job in penalties at the end). Louis and Will S performed well with Will setting up a couple of great forward passes we were unlucky to score from. Jacob came very close to goals but despite the great effort couldn’t find the net either. Thomas showed lightening speed in his goal speeding ahead of the opposition to rocket away a fine goal and Daniel also worked hard to save us from attack being really quick to spot when to kick out for safety. Ben looked like he was going to make the run of the match at one point to score but again we were unfortunate not to score.

Training tonight went well – thanks to Chris E & Ken for their help with training whilst Chris was training the U12’S as part of his Level 2 course.

For those who haven’t finalised if they will be joining their boys on the STFC match day to watch Swindon play Sheffield Wednesday on 4th December please confirm as payment is due and I need to confirm numbers. All WJFC players are subsidised by the club for their cost to £10.00 for the whole day experience.

Wanborough v Shaw

We enjoyed a spirited match against Shaw on Sunday and the boys fought hard to maintain their form. Tom and Jacob both scored and I think that we didn’t do enough to stop the oppositions two goals. Will S scored the decider giving us the win but Sam and Jacob had a lot to do in defence and Sam deserved his Man of the Match award! Daniel and Cameron both fought hard along with Louis, Ben and Christian to keep us on track. The opposition fought hard and they deserved their goals.

On to Fairford this Sunday – kick off at 11.00am. Team to arrive by 10.30 please.

Wanborough v Wootton Bassett B

What a great match – no subs which meant all players were committed to a full 40 minutes in their positions and how well it worked on this occasion. Jacob opened the scoring and Tom followed. Jacob added another two goals and Tom ended with five more. Will was doing some great work on the left wing and passed in perfectly to create goals for others yet managed one of his own by closing down a ball that hadn’t connected. Cameron produced an outstanding goal of his own and you could see in his face all of the second half (he was a bit under used as first half goalie) that he was determined to score. I was amazed that Christian didn’t score – here was another defender moving forward when the opportunity arose to have a go. Louis played midfield back and also worked really hard with a couple of chances to shoot at goal and tackled really hard. Sam lived up to his role as main defender – left on his own on a few occasions he did well to cover half the pitch when the opposition ran forward. Our opponents fought hard and were certainly determined when fighting for the ball – they deserved their two goals as they were the only occasions when we failed to control the ball and move it out of our goal area.

A weeks rest ahead for all – no match next weekend  but training as normal.

Well done Wasps - Gary

Friendly - Wanborough v STFC School of Excellence U7's

This was a brilliant opportunity to play (at their request) the U7’s from STFC’s school of excellence and our lads did really well. They played a whole match in the rain, kept their shape and every single team player added something to today’s match proving they are all excellent.

We had goals from Tom, Jacob and Will and ended with a (I think) deserved victory. An hour’s football is hard work and with a steady rate of substitutions I think all got a fair game. Daniel was on fire in the first half in goal and Tom, Jacob and Will as well as Ben did an outstanding job in taking the ball forward and rarely wasted opportunities to take a shot. Sam stood tall in defence with Will B and Christian – each making a big difference and stopping attacks. Louis had to start up from and in the centre and really played a great part with some excellent tackling. Cameron took on a busy role as second half goalie and made some good saves while also showing some of his playing skills on the pitch.

Thanks for your support (in the rain) – I think we forgot that while the game was on – you couldn’t look away!

Well done Wasps!

Wanborough v Supermarine

Another great match for the team! Tom started off with a goal and kept his amazing turn of speed up! Jacob followed with another goal always making sure he is in the right place when the ball is passed forward. Ben did great work scoring two goals and won the Captains Trophy – chosen by our Captain – Lewis who also did some great working in mid and forward positions. Will S did some good running in a trial running from left full back and did some nice footwork with the ball to take and keep possession. Christian did his usual solid defending and Daniel was an outstanding goalie. Will B and Sam did some swift defending keeping their positions. The boys continue to keep their shape and are playing really well together. Man of the match was Jacob for great passing and shooting.

We are at home this week against Wootton Bassett - 11am kick off.

Wanborough v Liden B

A sensational match against Liden B, probably the most exciting of the season so far! Liden B started off very strong and Cameron had to make a good save as the ball came back off the post. Then Wasps took control and Thomas made it 1-0 with a great finish after Liden's goalie had saved his first shot. Wasps dominated the rest of the half with two more brilliant goals from Thomas. Jacob had a superb shot from the left wing which their goalie somehow tipped onto the cross-bar and Louis headed one just over the cross-bar form a corner. The team were playing really well with some good passing  and Ben forced an own goal after a very dangerous corner. Will B, Sam and Christian were proving very solid in defence and Daniel was having some good runs on the right wing. The second half was end to end with Liden scoring three good goals but Wasps also did some attacking of their own with good work by Ben to earn a penalty and Jacob created a number of good chances but Liden's defence held firm and it took a strong defensive effort by the Wasps at the end to earn a narrow victory.  Overall a great match.

Training continues at Isambard for the next three weeks at 6pm.

Wanborough v Stratton

What a great match for the boys – even in really bad weather they had high spirits from the start! Despite being a mixed U7/U8 side I thought Stratton did themselves credit.

We had Cameron in goal for the first half and he did a great job. He deserved his Man of the Match trophy although it was difficult to choose this week because there was so much great play.

Christian was 2nd half goalie and did a great job – particularly in penalties but also was determined in defence. Will B did some really great defending having become fearless and was helped by Sam – both took their moments in defence to run forward but always got back in time. I hope you all admired the way they stuck to their opposite numbers when needed. Jacob had some chances on goal and played his part in the others (this week at training Chris emphasised the need for having a go with the left foot when shooting at goal) – it was great to see some runs with Daniel, Will S and Jacob all passing forward between each other. Tom scored two goals and continues to amaze with his speed, Daniel also another two with one from behind the halfway line, Ben another fine goal and two from Will S. Louis was doing some great tackling and goal scoring apart they all know they are part of a team with everyone deserving praise for their part in each win.

Liden B this weekend at 11am at home. Please be at school by 10.15

Good luck (I am away this Sunday and this will be the first match I have missed) – I know they will do themselves credit.

Wanborough v Highworth

I think most would agree this was an exciting match with plenty of action. Highworth are a strong side and played well with a great goal from a header.

Our lads performed brilliantly with Thomas scoring two great goals and Jacob another. Brilliant goal-keeping from Cameron (Man of the Match) and Christian in the second half stopped the opposition scoring more. Will did some great turns using his body to block and retaining possession whilst trying to pass in from the corner, Daniel was fast and fearless and Will B made some great stops in his defensive role. Louis is increasingly solid in getting the ball and taking forward and Sam looked in danger of taking a shot at goal at one point from a defensive run forward! Ben again can always be relied upon to take on the opposition and make a great difference in his centre forward role. A well deserved victory.

We are playing away at Stratton (near Cirencester) next week – details to follow by Tuesday – another team new to us! Training as usual at Church Meadow this week but in October we start training on Astroturf – at Ismbard School in North Swindon – details again during the week.

Thanks. Gary

Wanborough v Ramsbury

An enjoyable and well balanced match – Ramsbury are a good side and gave a good account of themselves with only an unlucky own goal on our side leaving us with the draw but some outstanding performances on our side and with excellent first match appearances from Louis and Will B. Louis worked really hard up and down field and deserved his Man of the Match award as did Will B who got the Captain’s award for great defensive play although Christian showed a master-class in blocking attacks. Daniel scored a great goal and Tom scored another two will Jacob coming very close, piling on the pressure. Will S did some great kicks out as 2nd half goalie managing to reach the opposition keeper. We will try to remind all of our budding strikers that they are not on their own and can pass when heading for the goal.

Kick off this Sunday 11am at Home against Highworth. Thanks to all parents for your support.

Wanborough v Pewsey Vale

Sunny and dry and our first match back on our home turf! The boys had a great match yet the opposition for a team with mixed U7/U8 players put up a great fight with some really fast players. Thomas again must have enjoyed chocolate croissants for breakfast putting two goals away, Will celebrated his birthday with a goal and Jacob also put in two with Ben scoring yet another goal. Interesting that we had the same names on the score sheet last week but Daniel hit the cross-bar or post twice in a determined effort and Cameron, Christian and Sam were positively whizzing up and down the field in defensive roles that moved swiftly forward and all credit to them that we didn’t let any through although the opposition certainly deserved a goal or two for effort. Thomas was our Captain and nominated Jacob for the Captains Award and Christian deserved his Man of the Match award for keeping his head up and making sure he was always in the right place.

We are away against Ramsbury next Sunday with kick off scheduled for 10.30 – please arrive by 09.45 latest. Thanks - Gary

Northern Lights v Wasps U8's - Sunday 5th September

We had an enjoyable start to the season despite rain for the entire match. Northern Lights have some new players and gave us a good match. Our Man of the Match was Thomas putting away four great goals – his speed on the pitch was the key (combined with 2 chocolate croissants for breakfast). Ben scored two including one fabulous corner curled straight into the goal without stopping. Jacob and Will added another fine goal each and our new recruit Sam was chosen by our Captain (Christian) to receive the Captains award for effort this week in his defensive role. The whole team got down to some excellent play remembering lots of their new skills and keeping their heads up despite the weather. Both Cameron and Christian took turns in goal and booted out some long goal kicks. Daniel also used speed and fearless tackling to maintain control of the ball. Well done to all.

We play at home this Sunday to Pewsey Vale U8’s with an 11am kick off (arrive by 10.30 latest please).

All of the boys had a great day and also had their photos taken with Swindon Town’s striker - Billy Paynter.
