A fine performance from a more confident Wanborough side with all 11 players available today and keen to show their abilities following a narrow 2-1 win by Marlborough away.
We started well and Will Sumner opening the scoring, followed by Jacob Chilcott with two great goals (very close to a third as well), Tom Moore made it 4-0 at half time. In the second half Marlborough fought back and following some goal mouth scrambles ended with three well deserved goals for their determined efforts. One of our newer players Liam O'Reilly was striker for the last period of the second half and scored his first great goal for the team.
Matthew Goldfinch (our newest player) came in at the start in left back and was incredibly solid and determined and deserved his ‘Player of the Match’ award. Christian was our Captain and showed he was the right choice with supportive words for his team on pitch and very solid defending.
Joel as usual worked hard in goal which wasn’t easy when two of Marlborough’s three goals came from some very close attacks in the goal mouth. Will B and Jake worked hard and both Cam and Daniel made an impact when they were on pitch. Although not always easy when you have four subs it helps that they were all desperate to play and prove themselves.
It was good to win as we did today, rather than losing by 2-1 as we did to Marlborough in the final seconds of the away match.
Gary Sumner
