Our first match of the new season was a good test of the training, which has emphasised over the summer the importance of positions.
The lads faced a newly promoted Lydiard Youth Blue who proved to be a very effective team. However fresh from many training sessions and his Swindon Town summer courses, Jake Hammond started as striker and did a fabulous job completing a hat-trick during the match and probably having his best match ever – even when playing at the back in the second half and coming forward. Steven Tilley also had a great match starting in a new position on the wing and running with great effect. Will Sumner and Tom Moore both did their usual marathons – Will from centre-mid initially then moving to left and Tom on the right. Will scored one goal and Tom two goals. Jacob Chilcott came on in the second half and did a fine job taking another goal. Joel Trojan also played in a new position and did really well, being instrumental in Jacob’s goal. Dan Eastell (Captain) did a great job – leading the team on and running his socks off as did Cam Averies in centre mid later on. Christian Pau was very solid in defence and Matt Goldfinch did a superb job in his new role as full-time goalie making some great saves.
Lydiard made a couple of great goals – one from a way out which was unstoppable and we also have an own goal in a bit of a goal-mouth scramble which couldn’t be avoided. They were a good team to play – strong but fair and we look forward to meeting them again in December. 7-3 to Wanborough being the final score.
On to our next League match on Tuesday against Ashton Keynes.
